Social Twist: Tell a Friend About Your Website

When you’re promoting an event, the most cost-effective way of doing it is through the web. Creating an event website always helps in telling people about your event. It can be an informational website or a blog – depending on the type of event.

If you’re thinking of having a wedding website, you may want to use a blog so you can post updates to your friends. If you’re promoting an event that will only be successful if a lot of people attend like a cultural festival, a beauty pageant or a concert – you may want to use social media tools.

One such tool that I am currently in love with is the Social Twist application, Tell-a-Friend.

Social Twist: Tell-a-Friend

It makes it easy for your website visitors to share your blog article or website URL with friends via email, IM and social networks. It is easy to install, register for a free account in Social Twist then build your widget. It then has step-by-step instructions on installing it in your blog or website. I use it on this blog, it’s the widget after each blog post that is labeled Te!! a Friend.

The free version, which I use, has a minimalistic email look and a generic button using the Tell-a-Friend’s branding. If you want to put in your own email templates and your own branding, you can customize it by upgrading to another type of account for $69/year. Very cost-efficient, right? I would recommend it to any one who has an event website they want to promote. It’s definitely a great tool to increasing website traffic and referrals.

May your event have lots of attendees and be considered a huge success!

Widgets: Promote ala Web 2.0

One of the most popular tools of promoting events nowadays is through a small online application called a widget.

Widgets may be developed using Flash, PHP (and other web development languages like JSP, ASP, etc. – PHP is just what I use personally), Javascript or plain HTML. It usually contains information about your event like video clips, advertising copy or graphics. The main characteristic of a widget is that it is embeddable to other websites. Fans go to your website, grab your widget and put it on their blog or social network account. Once they do this, their friends and fans will be able to see it and grab it as well. It is one of the best marketing tools in the advertising industry to date. You are basically letting your fans/friends do the leg work of promoting your event for you. Isn’t that cool?

Here are a few examples of cool widgets designed to promote movies:

Star Trek Widget

Angels & Demons Widget

And this potentially viral marketing phenomenon will cost you zero dollars plus the cost of developing the widget. Wow! Don’t you think you should look into this Web 2.0 technology when you promote your next big event. I can assure you, it’s worth it!
